Could UNIV and Chris Cote, Transworld Surf’s animated editor in chief, be the perfect recipe for a surfboard collabo? UNIV seems to think so and they teamed up with Cote to create an awesome artsy surfboard to stimulate your steez.
This sounds like a win-win to me as UNIV gets to team up with a living legend in Chris Cote, and at the same time they get some play in Transworld Surf as Transworld is planning on doing a feature on the surfboard very soon. On the other hand, UNIV gets a great board to sell in their shop to drive sales.
The surfboard is a four-fin double-ender, meaning it can be ridden both forward and backwards with ease. Oh and did I mention it features all kinds of random weapons and things?

Sometimes you just get those perfect moments when surfing… You may never get your ‘perfect moment’ or you may get lucky and have a few throughout your lifetime. I think it’s safe to say that Keith Bass got his by surfing with dolphins on friday.
These shots were taken by Jerrod Mills at Port Aransas last friday. According to Jerrod, the dolphin bumped Keith’s board as it flew out of the water. Stoked!

Dane Williams was a surfer and employee of Hurley International who was reported missing on Saturday January 26, 2008. His body was found Tuesday January 29, 2008 in San Diego. The following is a letter from his mother:
I thought it was about time I stepped in to get a few things cleared up. The press can sure exaggerate on the truth. If this wasn’t my son I’m speaking about, I’d say to myself, “That Poor Family”, why does the press have to sensationalize everything! The true facts that happened to my poor son Dane are bad enough, why in heavens sake are they making it worse for him and my family? In the Orange County Register alone, the headlines read: Alcohol, prescription drugs found in Hurley intern’s body! Well let’s clarify a few things here. Yes, Dane had Alcohol in his system that has always been said from the very beginning. Regarding the prescription drugs, Dane was found to have a small trace of valium in his system, this could have been purposely put in one of his drinks. However, the dose that was found in his system was so insignificant that it held no bearing whatsoever on Danes demise. Here is where it almost gets laughable to me if it wasn’t my son. The register stated that there was “quinine” in his system along with the valium; well quinine is nothing more than tonic water, period! I can’t explain why they had to put that in the paper making it sound as if Dane had Drug (s) (plural), unless they (the press) didn’t do there homework to find out what quinine is.
Now here is what we do know right now: Dane was out with friends at “The Hard Rock Hotel”, on the corner of 6th and K Street. (Not to be confused with Hard Rock Café) to have dinner and drinks after an all day work convention. Dane was not down in the Gaslamp district on vacation, he was at a work event. He left the hotel around 1:30 in the morning of Saturday the 26th. He was seen on surveillance leaving by himself. Dane was found 3 days later, 7 miles away, in one of the worst areas in San Diego. Dane did not walk there, he was dumped there. He was found wrapped in a blood-stained blanket with small cuts on his body. His clothing was damp and he had no personal belongings on him. There were tire and shoe tracks near his body. Believe me, this is more than suspicious. This was not a friendly drop-off. These were not friends of Danes. Something happened bad to Dane. Dane was a wonderful son and brother and a great friend to others.. He loved live and he wasn’t stupid. Something happened and we need to find out what…..No more jumping all over the story from one thing to another just to sell a paper…My son planned to be at work the next day. My son planned on being home just like the other 27,000 people that attended the “ASR Event”. And I’m going to find out what happened and in the meantime, not let his name get smeared all around just to sell a newspaper. Truth is always best………… Bottom line, he did not die from an alcohol or drug overdose, or the mixture of both. The coroner has confirmed this with us and as of this time it is an “undetermined death”. And again, someone knows something, please be that someone that calls Crime Stoppers. Any information at all could be the one key we are looking for….

Let’s all please repost this for Dane’s family and for his reputation. The news is screwed and they will do anything to make a buck by getting more people to watch or read their input. It’s so frustrating for me to hear the things about my friend that are said. I couldn’t imagine the way it makes his family feel at a time like this.
Anyone who can give any sort of information…even if you think it won’t make a difference, please take a moment to call Crime Stoppers. Anything you can offer may be of some help at this time, you just never know.
Kelly Slater is an amazing human being. The guy wasn’t even going to compete in this contest, but he ends up winning the thing. We don’t have much details at this point other than I think Slater is an alien. For realsies.

With so much hype around the Kelly Slater story, people have taken their attention off some of the other smaller-name guys competing as well. One of them being, 22 year old Dane Reynolds. Reynolds was boosting 9’s all day and his highest wave score came it at a 9.73 out of 10! That was the highest of the day.
Dane had this to say about the 9.73 score, “That (9.73) was just a perfect clean face,” Reynolds said. “I would have had to really blow it to not get a score. I basically connected the dots, I didn’t do anything too ridiculous, but that is all it took.”

So basically to sum up what is going on with Kelly Slater right now is… Yes he has made up his mind to compete in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach. See the thing is, Kelly wasn’t going to compete at first and withdrew from the event late last week. As expected, many were bummed on Slater’s decision.
Kelly then got online and noticed how bummed people were and in his own words, he had this to say about the situation, ”A combination of things influenced my decision to come to Bells. I had called ASP Tour Manager Renato Hickel to ask to be officially taken out of the event and that is when he asked me if I had seen the swell forecast.”
So the swell looks good, Slater is happy, what more could you want? It’s on!

Sexism in Surfing has been around for ages. Reef decided to take it to the next level with their genius marketing gimmick; The Reef Girls! Brilliant Reef! So what’s all the fuss about now? Well there is some drama flowing out of New Zealand about two upset Pro Female Surfers, that don’t think it’s fair that contestants at a nearby bikini contest, which was actually sponsored by Von Zipper, were being awarded with a top price of $1,000 and the first place finisher at the surf contest was only awarded $750!
I think that Bikini contests are fun and entertaining but let’s keep them away from the surfing venue and let’s dump more money into the pockets of these hard working female surfers. I can pretty much guarantee that most if not all of those girls in the bikini contest couldn’t name more than one pro surfer outside of Kelly Slater anyways. If these big name sponsors keep dumping their money into bikini contests, we are not going to have very many pro female surfers anymore. Think logistics and do the math. They are not happy with it and expect changes. Hopefully this can change for the better and similar problems don’t arise in the near future.
